We at Sherkin Island Marine Station, since our foundation in 1975, have in our own small way attempted to introduce people to these marine wonders with our research and educational programmes, conferences, exhibitions and various publications. However in those 17 years we have always wanted to do true justice to that world of beauty with a photographic book such as this.

The photographs chosen give but a glimpse of the thousands of animals and plants in Ireland's coastal waters. We hope that they will give people a new awareness of Ireland's wonderful natural resource - the sea.
