Accessing Dataset Phytoplankton Series 1

Accessing Dataset for:

Sherkin Island Marine Station PHYTOPLANKTON RECORD from the Southwest Coast of Ireland.

Series 1: Long-term data series from Roaringwater Bay / Long Island Bay and South of Sherkin Island, Co. Cork, 1980-2014

The dataset for Series 1 is available for download as a complete dataset, following the Darwin Core standard format, from:

https://doi.org/10.15468/crt6sc

The dataset was first published on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF www.gbif.org ) in August 2023 by the National Biodiversity Data Centre (https://biodiversityireland.ie), Ireland’s node to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. It was published using a standard file format, the Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A).

The GBIF site has a facility to search for the occurrence of species in this dataset. To view the abundance records for species, the entire dataset must be downloaded.

In order to make the data more accessible to those less familiar with database management, the dataset is presented in a simpler format – as an “Occurrence” dataset rather than a “Sampling Event” dataset. However, this necessitated the amalgamation of all the measurementorfacts data into one column, i.e. “dynamicProperties”, within the downloaded “occurrence.txt” file.

Though Sherkin Island Marine Station will not be able to help with this process, it is possible to separate or parse the “dynamicProperties” column. Import the “occurrence.txt” file into a spreadsheet program and by selecting “tabs”, “semi-colons” and “commas” as delimiters and the data will separate out. However, it is important to note that if the data is imported in this way, the column headers positioned after the parsed “dynamicProperties” columns will need to be moved to align with their respective columns. New column headers must be created for the parsed data that was originally grouped together in the “dynamicProperties” column.

An alternative is to import the “occurence.txt” file using the “tab” delimiter only. Move the “dynamicProperties” column to the end column and, if available, use a “Text to Column” feature to parse the data in separate columns and then apply appropriate column headings.

Biodiversity Maps

Data can also be viewed on Biodiversity Maps, a national portal in Ireland that compiles biodiversity data from multiple sources and makes it freely available on-line.

On Biodiversity Maps, access to the dataset is restricted (Data can be viewed on the mapping system but is not available for download). To download the complete dataset, visit https://doi.org/10.15468/crt6sc
