The Kowloon Bridge, a 140,000 ton ore carrier went on the Stag Rocks in West Cork on 24th November 1986. Fuel oil from the carrier was discharged over a period into the sea. Some of this was washed up on West Cork beaches. We invited to Ireland, from the U.K., the noted independent oil pollution scientist, Dr. Jenny Baker. Her brief was:

To access the damage
If there was damage - her recommendations for the clean up.
Bulletins Nos. 6,7,8, are her reports on the problem.

The duration of bright sunshine has been measured daily at the Station since August 1974. A Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder is used. This consists of a glass sphere mounted in such a way that the sun's rays are focused sharply on a card held in position concentric with the sphere. The sunshine is recorded by burn or scorch marks on the card. The sunshine must be above a certain intensity before it records a burn or scorch mark on the card, and when sunshine is interrupted by cloudiness there is a break in the trace.

For this study the sunshine records of Sherkin Island from August 1974 to December 1984 are considered. The records of Valentia Observatory, Roches Point and Rosslare from 1975 to 1984 are included as a comparison.

No 11: Air Temperatures of Sherkin Island 1975-1984

Helen Palmer

Price: €4.00

plus postage: Ireland - €2.60

(Please email for postage rate outside Ireland)

Air temperatures have been measured at Sherkin Island by the marine station since 1975 and have been obtained using thermometers exposed at a height of 1.2 metres above ground level. The thermometers are housed in a Stevenson Screen which is painted white for protection from direct radiation from the sun. The Maximum thermometer is a standard "mercury-in-glass" thermometer while minimum temperatures are obtained using an "alcohol-in-glass" thermometer. The mean temperature is taken as the arithmetic mean of the mean daily maximum and mean daily minimum values.

For this study the air temperature records of Sherkin Island from August 1975 to 1984 are considered. The records of Valentia Observatory, Roches Point and Rosslare from 1975 to 1984 are included as a comparison.
